My Summer Love

Summer is knocking at my doorstep and I'm already in LOVE.

Really!
How could you look into these little blue faces
and NOT fall hopelessly in LOVE?

If I could choose an official flower of Summer,
in my gardens it would always be

Blue Lobelia.

Cambridge Blue Lobelia

These tiny blooms have captured my heart
for as long as I've been gardening...

and that's a VERY long time.

Crystal Palace Blue Lobelia

Lobelia are native to South Africa.
I would love to see them blooming in the wild.
(Maybe my South African gardening friends could post a picture or two?)

In my gardens they are annuals.

Their little hearts flutter with delight in our Summer climate,
but would never survive the freezing cold of our Winters.

In my gardens you'll find them peeking out from potted containers...

...and dancing profusely throughout my flower beds.

There's just something special about these tiny blooms
that puts a skip in my step and makes me smile.

They will always be

My Summer Love!

  1. Yes, those true blue lobelias are gorgeous! Some years they have come back from seed in my garden, even though they aren't hardy. I'm staying away from annuals this year, but lobelia will show up if I get back into them in the future, for sure!

  4. The lobelia provides a true blue color that is hard to find in a flower and yours are gorgeous.

  9. Beautiful tribute to lobelia. I have planted it at the cottage in Maine, where it thrives with no care at the edge of the bed. Unfortunately, it's too hot in the South for it ... It is an amazing blue ...

  11. The blue in the lobelia reminds me of the blue in my mophead hydrangeas. It is such a wonderful color!

  18. Oh my goodness, I just love your photographs! I had some lovely lobelias exactly like these, but I left town for a week and my darling husband tried to water, but wasn't successful. I'm glad to delight in yours instead of miss mine:)

  19. Lobelias are going on my wish list for 2012 after seeing yours. Don't know how they will hold up to our hot and humid summers but I will do some research and asking gardeners in this area and at my favorite garden centers how well they do here. I don't have much blue, only some larkspurs and that wild ageranium that I never planted. My colors are cool cottage garden colors. Your blogs/photos have given me the inspiration I need to definately add more blues in 2012. Do you grows any of the lobelia from seeds or just buy the starter plants locally? Thanks for sharing your beautiful photo and information.
