Don't Ya Know I've Had a Hard Day?

 I'm feeling a little ragged
around the edges...

Raggedy Annes

Spent my whole day updating my template.
The pastels of Spring
just weren't speaking to me
anymore.

Pretty in Pink

I really like to change this blog
with each
changing season.

Don't even know
what happened to Summer...
I blinked
and she was gone.

Just an Old Zinnia

Thought I'd have it all up
and running
by noon.

That was long before I realized
Blogger is now
new and improved.

Last Leaf Hanging

Don't they know
that if it's not broken
they shouldn't try to fix it?

Changing the header was easy...
but the blog colors?

Oh my...
they'll just have to stay pastel
until I figure it out.

Done this dozens of times before
Never have I had
such trouble.

Enlightening Leaves

I've read too many tutorials
on how to fix Bloggers bumbling
and I can honestly say...

None of them work.

Maybe fresh eyes
another day
will solve the mystery.

♦♦♦

Update: Fresh eyes in the morning...I figured it out.
And I love the new Autumn look...
what do you think?

Witness to a Miracle... Becoming a BUTTERFLY

Nature is alive with bounteous miracles...

and if we allow ourselves time to slow our pace,
we just may be invited to witness something quite extraordinary...
right in our own back yard.

Something magical
is happening inside this beautiful Chrysalis...
 and the opaque outer shell
 gives us a window
to the amazing miracle taking place within.

Over the course of ten days
the chrysalis slowly begins to darken.

Soon orange and black colors become visible
with the tell tale markings of wings.
At any moment the miracle will be complete.

With no apparent warning,
the chrysalis quite suddenly splits open.

See... it's happening now!

Within seconds a new living creature
emerges.

A Monarch BUTTERFLY
is born!

The wings are crumpled and wet
and the butterfly immediately begins to
unfold it's wings.

The enlarged abdomen gently pulsates
distributing life-giving fluid
into the tiny veins of the wings...

allowing them to grow quickly and harden
so the butterfly may fly.

The abdomen will contract
 and become long and slender
as the wings elongate.

Within an hour of emerging
from the chrysalis,
our Monarch butterfly's wings
are full grown and dry.

The entire life cycle
from EGG to CATERPILLAR
to CHRYSALIS to BUTTERFLY
complete in four to six weeks.

And now he's ready to fly!

Several weeks ago I discovered a dozen or so Monarch Eggs scattered among the common milkweed that Mother Nature planted in a corner of my gardens three years ago. In all my many days of searching... these are the first eggs I have ever encountered. This milkweed is indeed a weed... and as weeds tend to do, it's taking over a beautiful flower bed. I don't like milkweed. But I do love Monarch Butterflies... and since milkweed is the only plant a monarch will lay her eggs on, I've let the milkweed stay.  Finding those eggs was truly a magical moment for me. You can read more about the eggs to journey to a Chrysalis HERE. Knowing that Monarchs are endangered, I brought two of the eggs inside to nurture. I longed to bring in more, but with a long awaited vacation on the horizon... I knew two was all I could care for. I have a Butterfly Castle... somewhat similar to a laundry hamper but with a zippered door. It was the perfect little palace to watch our royal miracle unfold. So glad I brought those two inside. None of the others survived.

We let our butterfly linger inside
for just a day or two...

Fresh flowers to sip nectar from
will give him much needed energy.

When we're sure his probiscus (tongue)
is working well...

it's time to say farewell.

During the morning hours
after the sun has warmed the earth a bit,
is the perfect time.

My daughter gently cupped him in her hands
and carried him outside to the gardens.

She placed him amidst the blooms
then carefully lifted her hands.

I have learned that if we choose a shady spot
our chance of capturing images before he takes off is much better.
But not always... sometimes they are eager to be free.

This one chose to linger.

But as soon as the sunshine hit his wings he began to quiver...
almost like he was revving up his motor...
and then, quite suddenly,
 he was off!

He quickly discovered
the 'Miss Molly' Buddleia blooms
in our Hummingbird/Butterfly Garden.

And after sipping the tasty nectar
for just a minute or two...

... he flew quietly from my life.

Safe travels dear little one... have a beautiful life.

Witness to a Miracle

It began with a tiny little egg in my garden.

Tiny Egg on Milkweed

A sweet discovery I've been waiting my whole life  to see.

Others have witnessed this from beginning to end...
but not me,
not from an egg
discovered in my very own garden.

1.2 mm high and 0.9 mm wide

 See the tiny vertical ridges?

There is only one thing
in all the world this could be...

Five Days Later

and it is just beginning to hatch.
What could be inside?

1/8 of an inch long

Welcome to our world little guy.

All he thinks about is eating...
first he'll eat his egg shell
and then he'll eat the milkweed
he lives on.

1/4 inch long

This tiny little caterpillar
is very hungry.

He has doubled in size in just one day.

You might too
if all you did was eat.

Day Four

You should know that milkweed is the only food
this caterpillar will eat.

Milkweed has a nasty toxin in it
that makes the caterpillar taste nasty.

Birds don't like the taste
so they choose not to eat the caterpillars.

Mother Nature's way of protecting them.

Caterpillar Changing his Clothes

As the caterpillar grows bigger,
he simply undresses.

He wiggles out of his skin
to a find a larger size just waiting for him.
And if he keeps on eating
he'll soon grow out of that as well.

And he will... keep on eating.

It's a Fine Life

As he eats,
he grows bigger and bigger each day.

Hungry, hungry caterpillar.

Fat Little Caterpillar

He will actually shed his skin FIVE times
in the next two weeks
as he grows to be two inches long.

About this time,
 something deep inside whispers...
it's time.

Hanging Out in J Position

So he scurries to find a place to hang...
upside down!

Quickly he begins spinning silk threads
to make a tiny button
to attach himself securely.

He looks like the letter J as he lifts his head.

Shedding his Skin

 And then something quite remarkable
begins to happen.

Un-Dressing

 The caterpillar completely
undresses again...
shedding his skin for the last time.

This time he looks very different.

Almost a Chrysalis

He continues to change
right before your very eyes.

He is becoming...

Chrysalis One Inch Long

   a beautiful Chrysalis...
with golden jewels to adorn.

 Surely a miracle.

♦ ♦ ♦

Now... something quite wonderful is happening
inside this tiny Chrysalis.
What will happen next?

Patience, my dear friends...
next post!

*It's been several weeks since I last posted here and about that long since I've had time to visit blogging friends. Thank you to those who have sent notes asking if I was ok... I am.  Life is good. Very good. My last little fledgling (# 8 of 8) just flew from our nest. I guess that makes us empty nesters. (Still trying to wrap my mind around that title.) I've known this stage of life was coming... just never took time to embrace the idea of it as it approached. Funny how life has a way of sneaking up on you. I've been blessed to be a stay at home mom for 37 years... so an empty nest is a major change in my life. Thankfully, I will forever be a mother, it is my greatest joy, but with the nest now empty, I can focus in a new direction. Still pondering... so many ideas... what to do, what to do.

The miracle in this post began as we were in transition, boxing up my daughter's life to move to college... a vacation to celebrate her... helping her move into her first apartment four hours away. Many thanks to a couple of my kids who dropped in while we were gone to get fresh leaves for the caterpillars. (We actually had two.) Yes, my kids know their mother is a bit crazy. Really, who asks their children to babysit their caterpillars? Timed it just right, butterflies emerged a few days after we arrived home. Missed taking pics of every moment. Added some to this post from several years ago when my sweet son in law brought home caterpillars for me to raise. Love that boy. You can read more about that adventure under the Butterfly label on the side bar.

Mamma Told Me There'd Be Days Like This

Caution:
This post will bring a smile to your face
and a skip to your step.
Think twice before reading further.

My Hummingbirds are Rock Stars!

(Skip to the bottom to find out why... or read on for the full meal deal.)

♥♥♥

For weeks I've sat, camera in hand
at gardens edge,
watching these little guys as they frolic.

The BEST way to start my day!

By now it's no secret...
they have a sweet fascination with my
Black and Blue Salvias
and I, quite frankly,
am fascinated watching them.

(Think of me in my bright flowered pj's
waiting patiently to capture them with my lens.
I've had sooo much fun!)

Oh they'll dance around the other blooms in my gardens...
but they are simply wild
over the trumpet like blossoms of this Salvia.

So last week I decided to introduce
something new to the scene.

A Hummingbird Feeder

I thought the sweet nectar might provide a bit of a boost
to their energy.

With Fall in the air,
it's just a matter of time
before they're off on their journey south.

 The first morning was hilarious.
They knew something sweet was in there,
they just couldn't figure out how to get to it.

I caught it all with my camera.

Sit back,
turn up your speakers
and enjoy the show.

Toe tapping is about to begin...

I should mention...
by the next day he had it all figured out.

When the Daddy Quail says "Pip, Pip, Pip!"

A beautiful Summer's morning
for a little adventure...

Let's go Daddy!

There are actually five little balls of fluff...
one is a pokey puppy.
Keep watching... he'll catch up!

There he is!
Count them...  1... 2...3...4...5!

Where's Daddy?

He's taking a sip from the stream.
And the little ones... see them climbing up after him?

Doesn't Nature provide a great camouflage?

His attention is only diverted for a minute...
then he's back on duty,
watching out for the little guys.

And here they come!
The pokey little puppy is not so sure about this adventure.

Mountain climbing!
Mamma would NEVER let us do this.

Made it to the top!
Now where do we go?

Over the "trees" of course!

Daddy said "Pip, pip, pip!"
Run for cover!

Can you see those little heads bobbing at the garden's edge?

Just making sure all is clear
before we head out into the meadow.

Here we go, guys.
Stay close!

Such obedience!

Now where are we going Dad?
This is the best day... ever!

Did you know that quail babies basically hatch from the egg
and "hit the road running."

They are able to run around and find their own food
just a few hours after hatching.
They remain with their parents for safety and bonding
until they molt from down to feathers and are able to fly.

Both parents care for the brood and if something happens to one,
often another adult will step in to help.

♦   ♦   ♦

This is our second quail family to visit our gardens.
I'm hoping it was just Daddy's turn to take the little ones out for their morning adventure,
but reason tells me something's happened to the Mamma.

We haven't seen any quail for several weeks...
we miss their "Chi-ca-go" call and their "Pip, pip, pip".

Still hoping they return... they've been such fun to watch.

BTW, all pictures are taken
through my kitchen window.

What a view...
wonder what I'll see there today?
