Witness to a Miracle

It began with a tiny little egg in my garden.

Tiny Egg on Milkweed

A sweet discovery I've been waiting my whole life  to see.

Others have witnessed this from beginning to end...
but not me,
not from an egg
discovered in my very own garden.

1.2 mm high and 0.9 mm wide

 See the tiny vertical ridges?

There is only one thing
in all the world this could be...

Five Days Later

and it is just beginning to hatch.
What could be inside?

1/8 of an inch long

Welcome to our world little guy.

All he thinks about is eating...
first he'll eat his egg shell
and then he'll eat the milkweed
he lives on.

1/4 inch long

This tiny little caterpillar
is very hungry.

He has doubled in size in just one day.

You might too
if all you did was eat.

Day Four

You should know that milkweed is the only food
this caterpillar will eat.

Milkweed has a nasty toxin in it
that makes the caterpillar taste nasty.

Birds don't like the taste
so they choose not to eat the caterpillars.

Mother Nature's way of protecting them.

Caterpillar Changing his Clothes

As the caterpillar grows bigger,
he simply undresses.

He wiggles out of his skin
to a find a larger size just waiting for him.
And if he keeps on eating
he'll soon grow out of that as well.

And he will... keep on eating.

It's a Fine Life

As he eats,
he grows bigger and bigger each day.

Hungry, hungry caterpillar.

Fat Little Caterpillar

He will actually shed his skin FIVE times
in the next two weeks
as he grows to be two inches long.

About this time,
 something deep inside whispers...
it's time.

Hanging Out in J Position

So he scurries to find a place to hang...
upside down!

Quickly he begins spinning silk threads
to make a tiny button
to attach himself securely.

He looks like the letter J as he lifts his head.

Shedding his Skin

 And then something quite remarkable
begins to happen.

Un-Dressing

 The caterpillar completely
undresses again...
shedding his skin for the last time.

This time he looks very different.

Almost a Chrysalis

He continues to change
right before your very eyes.

He is becoming...

Chrysalis One Inch Long

   a beautiful Chrysalis...
with golden jewels to adorn.

 Surely a miracle.

♦ ♦ ♦

Now... something quite wonderful is happening
inside this tiny Chrysalis.
What will happen next?

Patience, my dear friends...
next post!

*It's been several weeks since I last posted here and about that long since I've had time to visit blogging friends. Thank you to those who have sent notes asking if I was ok... I am.  Life is good. Very good. My last little fledgling (# 8 of 8) just flew from our nest. I guess that makes us empty nesters. (Still trying to wrap my mind around that title.) I've known this stage of life was coming... just never took time to embrace the idea of it as it approached. Funny how life has a way of sneaking up on you. I've been blessed to be a stay at home mom for 37 years... so an empty nest is a major change in my life. Thankfully, I will forever be a mother, it is my greatest joy, but with the nest now empty, I can focus in a new direction. Still pondering... so many ideas... what to do, what to do.

The miracle in this post began as we were in transition, boxing up my daughter's life to move to college... a vacation to celebrate her... helping her move into her first apartment four hours away. Many thanks to a couple of my kids who dropped in while we were gone to get fresh leaves for the caterpillars. (We actually had two.) Yes, my kids know their mother is a bit crazy. Really, who asks their children to babysit their caterpillars? Timed it just right, butterflies emerged a few days after we arrived home. Missed taking pics of every moment. Added some to this post from several years ago when my sweet son in law brought home caterpillars for me to raise. Love that boy. You can read more about that adventure under the Butterfly label on the side bar.

Earth Day 2013... Why Should We Care?

Each morning I wake up, open my sleepy eyes
and look out through my windows to greet the new day...
my own little corner of the world.

Sweet melodies of the songbirds fill the air and my heart
and I am blessed that they choose my gardens...
as their home.

I believe we are guardians over this beautiful earth
and all the creatures that live within...

and as we do our part
to protect and provide...

our eyes are opened wide
to the everyday miracles around us.

And we are made better
because of our connection...
to them!

As we come to truly understand
our stewardship...

and take serious our role...

 we find delight
in every living creature!

 Through them
we may learn more about ourselves...

 and increase our desire
to show love and kindness to all living souls.

Even those
we may not particularly like.

Surely we will discover...

that their well-being
is entwined with ours!

 And then maybe
just maybe...

we can learn to live peacefully with each other.

Happy Earth Day

Resolve this day to do your part
to keep this world
a beautiful place for us all to live.

Daily Blessings... November 10th

CHANGE!

Today I am grateful for change in my life.

Read about the Little Caterpillar that Changed HERE

I have learned in my years of living not to be afraid of change
but to embrace it!

Change brings new perspective in life
and new growth.

Lovin' the changes to my blog this morning,

(This post is dedicated to a darling daughter who is up to her eyeballs in change... Love you!)

Butterfly Dreams Part 4... Change from Within

With the caterpillars transformed into Chrysalis, we wait...

Chrysalis formed on leaf of Milkweed

and wait...

Chrysalis moved to safety

and wait.

Tied with thread to top of Butterfly Castle
Everyday we watch for signs of change.

And then it begins...
Can you see the change?
The Chrysalis begins to blacken.

8-12 days will have elapsed since the caterpillar became a Chrysalis. Each of our Chrysalis have entered this stage in the late afternoon or evening.

As it blackens, the Chrysalis appears to become translucent
and we can see what's slowly happening inside.

When morning comes, we can clearly see the wings of the butterfly
through the Chrysalis...

and the body on the opposite side from the wings.

Soon the butterfly inside will begin to expand
and at that very moment...

the Chrysalis will begin to split vertically up the center.

This all happens within a matter of seconds...
and then the beautiful Monarch Butterfly will emerge.

If you blink...
you will miss it.

Come watch this miracle unfold on our next post.
It truly is amazing!

Butterfly Dreams Part Three... Chrysalis!

Changes are happening rather quickly in our Butterfly Dreams!
Our caterpillars are transforming into Chrysalis.

Monarch Caterpillars in the wild will move away from their food source to begin this transformation into a Chrysalis. Even though we provided sticks for our caterpillars to climb on, several chose to spin their little white button of silk to the underside of a leaf.
Not a good idea.

There are five more hungry caterpillars
who may realize this leaf will make a tasty meal.

But at this stage of the transformation, it's too late to encourage the little guy to go elsewhere. If we wait patiently for a few days, it will be easy and safe to move him.

So we wait.

After about twelve hours,
something magical began to happen to our upside down caterpillar...

Quite suddenly,
his skin split open!

And look at what's inside!

We watched with amazement
as the change took place.

The Chrysalis began to shift from side to side...

 wiggle and waggle

 back and forth,

  back and forth...

until everything feels just right,

 all comfy and cozy.

This all happens within a minute or two.

Then slowly, if you have the patience to watch,
more subtle changes take place until all appears to be still.

At least on the outside.

On the inside another miracle is taking place
and the transformation will be complete in 8-12 days.

But wait!
Our first Chrysalis is still in a dangerous place.

Can you see the danger?
Already those leaves are beginning to disappear.

And that isn't all the danger.
After a couple of days, the leaf is beginning to dry. The branch this leaf is on is in a vase of water and after three days must be discarded and replaced with a fresh branch of milkweed.

Not good for a Chrysalis that needs peace and quiet for 8-12 days.

It's time for rescue intervention...

We left the new chrysalis undisturbed for 2-3 days, then we carefully tied a piece of thread to the black stem of the Chrysalis and cut it away from the leaf it was attached to.
Then we tied the thread to the stick.
This was an easy solution...
this Chrysalis is safe.

And now we wait for the butterfly to emerge.
Sweet Dreams little Butterfly!
We'll see you in our NEXT post!
